Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 42).
This beauty features a Larger Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Classic Norton Exuberant Floral Decoration. Stems, leaves, buds, and blossoms move in all directions across the front. Dark and rich cobalt too! Stands 14" tall. Comes with a period, form and color matching lid.
Excellent Condition. A half-dozen minor nibbles on the inner lid-seating ring, a few very light, small and scattered stains. That's it! No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. The lid is as made.
