Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 ( William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Bird on a Branch Decoration in Bright Cobalt Blue. The little bird has a dotted breast. Stands 13 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 3/16" chip on top of the spout, scattered short surface age lines on the shoulder, and minor small spots of faint staining. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A 1/4" stone ping on the top of the branch in the making.
