    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Gorgeous 2 Gallon Stoneware Preserve Jar made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."

     

    This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin Edward Norton who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 ( William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).

     

    This beauty sports the potter's stamp with cobalt wash and one of the signature Norton decorations, the Large Double Thistles with Plenty of Leaves and Accents in all Directions! Exceptional cobalt applied with a slip cup too! Measures 11 3/4" tall.

     

    Excellent Condition. A 1/2" chip and wear on the inner seating ring, a 1 1/4" chip on the rim behind the left handle, and some light staining near the bottom from use.   That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.  A small clay flip at the tip of the left thistle in the making.
