Item 11943
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this superb 5 Gallon Stoneware Crock made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42).
This beauty features a Large Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Classic Norton Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup Using Dark and Shiny Cobalt. The large size of the crock allowed the artist to create a large chicken. The bird has four additional stripes on its back and dots on its tail. Rather than just corn kernels, the artist has also provided plentiful ground cover as well. Measures 12 3/4" tall and wide.
Excellent Condition. Five chips inside the rim (1/4" to 1") (closeup). That's it! No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
A Norton classic is superb condition!
