Item 1024
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Preserve Jar made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton, his son Luman, and his cousin Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1859-1861 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42, 44).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Floral Bouquet Incorporating a Pear! An early edible bouquet! The decoration is executed with a slip cup in strong cobalt by an expert hand. Stands 11 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Heavy even wear around the inner rim where a lid would sit, a 1 1/4" chip on the rim in the back, a flat 1/4" flake on the right handle, and some very light scattered staining. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A 3" drying line inside the rim in the making (closeup).
A unique fruit and floral bouquet by Norton.
