Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 42).
This beauty features a Smaller Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Classic, yet Uncommon, Norton Rooster Decoration. The rooster stands in a ring of ground cover beside a pine tree. All the decoration is executed with a slip cup in bright and shiny Norton cobalt. Measures 9 1/4" tall and 10 1/4" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. Five small chips inside the rim and one outside, minor nibbles and a 3/4" chip outside the rim, two 1/4" chips under the left handle, and a 1/2" chip on the underside, and some scattered staining. No hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
