Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Decorated Jug made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Classic Norton Double Thistle Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup Using Dark and Shiny Cobalt. Two thistle blossom arise from a leafy stem. Stands 15 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 3/8" surface ping on the right side of the spout (closeup) and some very light staining on the bottom of the right side. Otherwise, as made!
