Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this imposing 3 Gallon Stoneware Merchant Jug made for "Peter A. Staring, Little Falls, N.Y."  
 
This is the mark of Edward Norton and Luman Preston Norton, the son of Julius Norton, who worked together in the family pottery in Bennington, Vermont from 1861-1881 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 44)
 
This beauty sports the Merchant Advertising with Cobalt Wash and a Large Bird on a Large Floral in Strong Cobalt.  The bird is 10" from the tip of his or her beak to the tip of its tail feathers.   The birdie stands on more than a branch-- it is a complete dotted floral often found upright on Norton jugs.  Stands 15 3/4" tall.
 
Very Good Condition.  A surface ping on the bottom of the left side (closeup) and some staining on the lower half.   No spout chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
