Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Superb 2 Gallon Stoneware Crock made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT.
 
This is the mark of Julius Norton, his cousin Edward Norton, and his son, Luman who worked together in the family pottery from 1859-1861 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
 
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Magisterial Large Bird on a Dotted Branch Decoration Bright Bennington Cobalt Blue.  This is a classic example of the birds of Bennington.  The birdie is 8" long with three sets of individual feathers and the branch supportiing him has a dozen leaves and 18 dots!  Measures 9" tall and 10" wide across the top. 
 
Excellent Condition.  Three 1/4" chips inside the rim and one outside.   Some very light on the left side.  That's it!  No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.  A stone ping on the left handle on the back terminal in the making.
