Item 12645
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Bird Jug made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Bird on a Stump Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup Using Dark and Shiny Cobalt. A Norton classic that is a feast for the eyes! Stands 11" tall.
For some reason, there is a second pottery stamp on top of the bird's head and beak.
Very Good Condition. A faint surface-only 5" vertical craze line to the right of the bird from below the kiln touch to above the base (closeup). No spout or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A 3/8" clay void on the left side near the bottom in the making.
