Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 1/2 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 42).
This beauty features the pottery stamp with cobalt wash, and a Classic Norton Bird on a Branch Decoration. Dark and rich cobalt too! Stands 10 1/4" tall.
Fair Condition. Wear and chips around the inner lid-seating ring. Four hairlines: 2" from the rim on the front right (closeup 1), 5" on a diagonal under the left handle (closeup 2), 2" on the bottom of the right side (closeup 3), and across the underside. No rim or base chips, stains, or restoration.
Even so, displays well.
