Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Decorated Jug made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Classic Norton Double Thistle Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup Using Dark and Shiny Cobalt. Two thistle blossoms arise from a leafy stem. Stands 15 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A minor 3/16" chip on the spout, a half-dozen shallow 1/4" flakes around the base, and some scattered body flakes. No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A 5" horizontal drying/firing line near the base on the right side in the making (closeup).
