Item 11486
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Fantastic 4 Gallon Stoneware Churn made and stamped by "M. Woodruff, Cortland."
This is the work of Madison Woodruff who ran the pottery in Cortland, New York from 1849-1885 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71).
This beauty is at the top of the stoneware pyramid. It features an Elaborate Whimsical Folk Art Decoration. A brushed cobalt "lyre" shaped frame is adorned on the outside with dashes and dots and inside with a colum of dots and dashes culminating at the top with some foliage. Encased dots cap the decoration on the top. The decoration builds on Woodruff's fanciful double tulips that appear to have a bulb between them. Stands 17" tall.
Excellent Condition. Wear and chipping around the inner lid-seating ring, and scattered light staining from use. That's it! No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
