Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Stoneware Churn made by "T. F. Reppert, Greensboro, Pa."
Thomas Reppert made pottery solo in Greensboro from 1884-1890 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 157-159).
This beauty features a Top to Bottom Decoration. From the top down is a broad stripe under the rim, a straight and a wavy stripe at the shoulder, a freehand capacity number 5 framed by leaves, the company advertising filling the body while surrounding a large floral and a pair of leaves and being accented top and bottom with blooming tulips, and a broad straight stripe at the bottom. All the decoration is complete, crisp, and executed in dark cobalt. Stands 17 1/2" tall.
Bought yesterday from a 45 year old collection in Pennsylvania.
Excellent Condition. Very light staining. A faint 2 1/2" vertical surface glaze craze line on the front (closeup 1) and a virtually invisible 4" vertical in-body hairline on the back (closeup 2). No chips, cracks, or restoration.
