Item 11881

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Large 4 Gallon Cream Pot with Equally Large Bird.

Its decoration indicates that it is the work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery in Utica, New York from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware , pp. 69-70).

Dating about 1870, this beauty a Large Size and a Paddletail Bird on an Orchid Branch. This is one of White's signature decorations and a perennial favorite with collectors. An abundance of rich cobalt blue.  The bird is 10 1/2" from the tip of his beak to the tip of his tail.  The branch has three leaves, a blossom, and seven buds.  Brilliant cobalt throughout the decoration.  Measures 12" tall and 12" wide across the top.

Very Good Condition.  Expert restoration for a 3/4" chip inside the back of the left handle.  Otherwise, no chips, hairlines, cracks, or stains.  Sometimes in the firing, the cobalt at the end of the pour of a slip cup pops off in the firing.  That happened on this piece, so there is expert addition of cobalt to those locations on the decoration (closeup).  In those locations, the cobalt is slightly thicker, but the match in color is exact.
