Item 11646
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Superb 3 Gallon Stoneware Jar made and stamped by "Pfaltzgraff & Co., York, PA ."
There appears to be two letters lightly stamped before "Pfaltzgraff". They are either "J.B." for John B. Pfaltzgraff, son of Johann G. Pfaltzgraff, who ran the family pottery in York in the 1870's or H. B." for Henry B. Pfaltzgraff, both sons of Johann Pfaltzgraff who managed another pottery in the 1870's and 1880's (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners , p. 51; Historical Society of York County, York, Pennsylvania, Pfaltzgraff: America's Potter, pp, 29-31).
This beauty features a Larger Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Huge Brushed Cobalt Tulip with a Stem of 6 Leaves Holding up a Blssom with Eleven Petals. The contrast between the light gray clay and rich cobalt decoration is about as good as you will ever see on any Pfaltzgraff stoneware. Stands 13" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 1/2" chip inside the rim, chipping under the left handle, a minor 1/4" flake under the right handle, and two adjacent chips on the underside at the edge (3/8", 5/8"). That's it! No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
