Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this fantastic 2 Gallon Stoneware Preserve Jar made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Julius Norton, his cousin Edward Norton, and his son, Luman who worked together in the family pottery from 1859-1861 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Large Bird on a Branch Decoration in Bright Bennington Cobalt Blue. The artist impresses us with his decoration and use of color! Stands 11 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. Eight nibbles/chips on the inner seating ring (pinhead to 3/8"), two chips on the left handle (1/4", 3/8") and three on the right (1/4" to 1/2"). That's it! A stone ping on the bottom of the branch, a 2 1/2" surface drying line inside (closeup 1), and a 1 1/2" surface drying line at the base (closeup 2)--all in the making.
