Item 12439
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful Decorated 2 Gallon Stoneware Crock made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and an Floral Decoration created by a Slip Cup on Bright Cobalt. It is an unusual floral for this maker. Four leaves that look like the Norton butterfly design hold up a blossom with multiple petals. Curiously, the decoration is a predecessor of that used in the Midwest, especially by the Red Wing pottery. Measures 9" tall and 10" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. A 1/4" chip inside the rim and two small chips outside the rim (1/4", 1/8"). Water glass staining inside with traces outside. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
