Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is thias wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin Edward Norton who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large and Exquisite Pheasant on a Stump Decoration. This is one of Norton's signature decorations, and this one is precisely executed with a slip cup in shiny cobalt. The pheasant is 9" from head to tail! Stands 15" tall.
Very Good Condition. Some scattered light staining, scattered surface wear, and two horizontal lines in the handle (closeup). No spout or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
