Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Stunning 3 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin Edward Norton who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 ( William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Double Thistle Decoration in Bright Bennington Cobalt Blue. The floral has an array of leaves at the base that support two thistle flowers. All the detailed work was executed with a slip cup. The artist impresses us with his decorating skill! Stands 15 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. Three coin-size stains. That's it! No chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A stone ping on the right side of the left thistle in the making.
