Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Uncommon 2 Gallon Stoneware Decorated Jar made by "H. Loundes, Manufactor, Petersburg, Va."
Henry Lowndes made stoneware in Petersburg, Virginia from 1830 to 1842. See Eric Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia, pp. 184-207 and Charles Umstott, "The Lowndes Stoneware Pottery of Petersburg, Virginia," MESDA Journal, Vol. XXI, No. 2 (Winter 1995), pp. 83-97.
Provenance: Pictured in Eric C. Jenkinis, Ceramics in Virginia, p. 198, Figure 5.10. It comes most recently from the fine collection of William H. Chapman III of Virginia.
This beauty features an Unusual Form and Decoration. The potter made a straight-sided jar for one thing, and then framed the Pottery Script Advertising with a Tree of Life on Both Sides of the Script rather than on the Back. The script is executed with a slip cup by a skilled hand using dark and shiny cobalt The trees of life are drawn with a stem poured from a slip cup and five branches with leaves and blossoms made with a brush. Again with dark and shiny cobalt. Stands 13" tall.
Very Good Condition with Restoration. Professional restoration a chip and 1 1/2" hairline on the front of the rim and for a 1/2" hole in the bottom center (flower pot?) with two lines from it to the edge forming a triangle and scattered restoration around the bottom 2" of the base.
