Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Pitcher whose form and decoration indicates that it was made by Henry Zigler of Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.  Newville."
 
Henry Zigler made stoneware in Newville, Pennsylvania from the early 1850's to 1865 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, p. 44). 
 
This beauty features a Tooled Rim with Three Grooves, Tall Neck, Tooled Shoulder, Bulbous Body, Applied Handle and Exceptional Cobalt Decoration.  Vertical comma vining frames the spout with two additional leaves on each side.  The main attraction is a vine with three blossoms cascading around the body.  All the cobalt is dark, bright, and shiny.  The work of a skilled potter.  Stands 9 1/2" tall. 
 
Excellent Condition.  A 3/4" chip on top of the rim in the back, a shallow 1/2" chip on the spout, and a 5/8" chip at the base.  No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.  
 
Comes most recently from a private Pennsylvania collection.  There is a paper on the bottom reading, "This pitcher is called a stone pitcher.  My Father brought it home  many years ago from one of his trips [to] Spring Run in Path [Vall]ey, about 1913."
