Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "Cowden & Wilcox, Harrisburg, PA."
This is the mark of John Wallace Cowden and Isaac Wilcox who ran the pottery in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania using this stamp from 1863 to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 55-58).
Thus beauty features a Tall and Narrow Form, Flat Rim, Tooled Shoulder, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent, Pottery Stamp and Capacity Number with Cobalt Wash, and a Brushed Cobalt Chrysanthum Blossom with Three Buds Decoration. Bright and shiny cobalt on a light gray glaze. Stands 11 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Two 3/8" chips on on the back of the rim, a 1/4" chip on the right handle, and a faint semi-circular surface craze line on the underside (closeup).
An unusually tall and narrow jar with equally unusual decoration by Cowden and Wilcox in excellent condition.
