Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this fantastic 3 Gallon Merchant Jar made for "A. T. Baird, Grocer, Washington, Pa."  It was probably made in Greensboro, Pennsylvania by one of the Hamilton potteries.

Dating around 1880, this beauty is Decorated Top to Bottom with Freehand and Stenciled Decoration.  From the top down are 2 broad stripes framing the rim, a wavy stripe at the shoulder, freehand vining across the top, the stenciled advertising in the middle, and a freehand capacity number flanked by three stripes on each side and underscored with another stripe.  Additional cobalt accents at the handle terminals.  Very pretty shiny cobalt too!

Very Good Condition.  Some glaze exfoliation inside, A fine 2" line on the bottom of the right side that wraps under 3", and some water glaze staining from use.  No chips, cracks, or restoration.  Some excess salt on the front bottom edge in the making.
