Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 1 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jar whose form and decoration make it easy to attribute to John Poole Schermerhorn.
Schermerhorn had a pottery on Rocketts Landing of the James River in Henrico County, Virginia from around 1817 to 1837. He died in 1850. See Eric C. Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia, pp. 116-171.
This beauty features a Small 1Gallon Size, Semi-Ovoid Form, Tooled Rim and Shoulder, Bulbous Base, Applied Handles with Cobalt on the Top, and Four Wavy Cobalt Stripes on One Side and Five on the Other. Stands 9 1/4" tall.
Very Good Condition. Three small chips on the shoulder (1/8" to 1/4"), a narrow 1/2" chip on the bottom edge, and some light staining from use. No rim chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
