Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Little 1 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jar whose form and decoration make it easy to attribute to John Poole Schermerhorn.

 

Schermerhorn had a pottery on Rocketts Landing of the James River in Henrico County, Virginia from around 1817 to 1837.  He died in 1850.  See Eric C. Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia, pp. 116-171.  This jar is featured on p. 141 (photo above)

 

Provenance:  This jar comes most recently from the fine collection of William H. Chapman III of Virginia.

 

This beauty features an Unusually Small Size and Northern Form with Tall Rim, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent Along the Top, and a Brushed Cobalt Floral Garland in Brilliant Cobalt Blue on Each Side. Stands 9 1/4" tall.  

 

Very Good Condition with Restoration.  Restoration for two lines on one side: from the rim halfway down to a horizontal 5" line (closeup 1) and from the rim halfway down (closeup 2).  Otherwise, as made.
