Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 4 Gallon Ovoid Jar whose decoration indicates that it was made by Robert Davidson of Richmond, Virginia.
This decoration is found on Baltimore stoneware of T. W. Brotherton from the 1830's. Davidson was his partner and he briefly made stoneware in Richmond in 1841.
This piece is featured in Eric C. Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia: 19th Century Stoneware from the Lower James River Valley, p. 212.
This beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form, Tooled Rolled Rim, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent at the Handle Terminals, and a Brushed Cobalt Flower on Each Side. The flower has six leaves and four blossoms with three open petals each. Stands 16" tall.
Very Good Condition. Three short hairlines from the rim 1", 2", 2 1/2" (closeups). A narrow 1" chip on the bottom fold of the rim, and two faint y-shaped hairlines on the underside. No rim or base chips, stains, or restoration.
