Item 12832
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 6" Stoneware Wax Sealer Canning Jar.
The white overglaze and decoration indicate that it was made by Solomon Bell of Strasburg, Virginia. I have owned a similar jar with Solomon's stamp.
Solomon was one of the most famous of the Bell Family Potters, working as a potter in Strasburg from the early 1850's until his death in 1882 (H. E. Comstock, The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, pp. 373-74).
This beauty features an Unusual Wax Sealer Form with Grooved Rim for the Hot Wax Sealant, White Streaked Overglaze, and Three Brushed Cobalt Upright Tulips Separated by Three Comma Vines Hanging from the Rim. Stands 6 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. A 1" stamp outside the inner rim, and a chipped section on the inside and top of the outer rim (closeup). No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
