    Coming to you by Doc's Crocks is this Rare 6 Gallon Decorated Crock Lid made and stamped by "S. Purdy."

     

    This is the mark of Solomon Purdy who came to Ohio in 1812 and made pottery in Zanesville before moving to Mogadore in Portage County in the 1830's to make pottery. He ran the pottery until 1840 when he turned it over to his son, Henry (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 17-27).

     

    This beauty features a Rare Form, Large Size, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and 12 Large Cobalt Dashes in Two Circles around the Lid.  Measures 12" in diameter and fits in a crock with an opening at least 9 3/4" wide.  

     

    Very Good Condition.  A faint 1" hairline from the rim, two chips on the edge (1/2", 1 1/2"), Sa 1 1/2" chip on the edge, some chips on the underside at the edge, and some chips on the outer edge of the seating ring on the underside.  No cracks, stains, or restoration.
