    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "L. D. Funkhouser & Co., Strasburg, VA." 

     

    This is the mark of Luther D. Funkhouser who was a pottery salesman and had local Strasburg Potters like Hickerson make pottery with his stamp for him.  He retailed stoneware from around 1866 to 1903.  One of his main custoers was William Kinnier of Lynchburg, Virginia (H. E. Comstock, The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, pp. 407-409). 

     

    This beauty features a Thick Tooled Rim with Recessed Shoulder for Ease of Tying Wax Paper or Cloth over the Top, Four Units of Brushed Cobalt Comma Vining around the Shoulder, and the Pottery Stamp with the Rising Sun Motif.  Stands 11" tall.

     

    Excellent Condition.  A 1/4" chip inside the rim and two 1/4" chips outside the rim.  That's it!  No base chips,  hairlines, cracks, stains or restoration.
