Item 11151

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 2 Gallon Stoneware Pitcher whose form and decoration make it easy to attribute to John Poole Schermerhorn.

Schermerhorn had a pottery on Rocketts Landing of the James River in Henrico County, Virginia from around 1817 to 1837.  He died in 1850.  See Eric C. Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia, pp. 116-171.  This pitcher is pictured on p. 138.

This beauty features a Large 2 Gallon Size, Tooled Rim and Shoulder, Bulbous Base, Applied Handle, and a Brushed Cobalt Decoration.  A stripes encircles the inside top of the spout, three horizontal stripes proudly adorn the length of the spout, two vertical stripes frame the spout from the sides, a large vine cascades across the front with two large circular blossoms, and a stripe runs top to bottom on the handle.  Stands 14 1/4" tall.

Very Good Condition.  Small chips under the overhang of the rim, chips on the spout, three short lines inside the spout in the back (1/2" to 1") that partially show outside with a magnifying glass (closeups), and a 1/2" chip on the bottom edge.  No cracks, stains, or restoration.
