Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful piece of James River, Virginia Stoneware.
It is a piece from the Four Mile Creek area bearing decoration common to that area. See Eric C. Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia: 19th Century Stoneware from the Lower James River Valley, pp. 93-94).
Circa 1830-1840, this beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form with Tooled Grooved Rim for Ease of Tying a Cover Over the Top, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accents at the Handle Terminals, and a Fern Decoration on Both Side. Stands 12 1/4" tall.
Good Condition. A minor, narrow 1/4" chip on each handle. A sealed line on the bottom with a line up to the shoulder on one side (closeup 1) and halfway up the other side (closeup 2). No rim or base chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
