Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Superb 4 Gallon Stoneware Decorated Jar made by "H. Loundes, Maker, Petersburg, Va."

Henry Lowndes made stoneware in Petersburg, Virginia from 1830 to 1842. See Eric Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia, pp. 184-207 and Charles Umstott, "The Lowndes Stoneware Pottery of Petersburg, Virginia," MESDA Journal, Vol. XXI, No. 2 (Winter 1995), pp. 83-97.

Provenance: Pictured in Eric C. Jenkinis, Ceramics in Virginia, p. 199, Figure 5.12. It comes most recently from the fine collection of William H. Chapman III of Virginia.

This beauty features a Large Form and Double-Sided Decoration.  The script is executed with a slip cup by a skilled hand using dark and shiny cobalt.  A five branched tree of life is found below and is drawn with a leafy stem poured from a slip cup sporting five blossoms made with a brush.  Usually this decoration is on the back side, but this larger jar allows for it on the front AND on the back.  Again with dark and shiny cobalt. Additional cobalt at the handle terminals. Stands 16" tall.

Good Condition with Restoration.  Professional restoration for a circular line on the bottom with two 2" arms up the side and two larger ones that meet in the decoration on the left side (closeup).  Otherwise, a couple chips under the right handle.
