Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Pitcher made and stamped by "Cowden & Wilcox, Harrisburg, PA."
This is the mark of John Wallace Cowden and Isaac Wilcox who ran the pottery in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania using this stamp from 1863 to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 55-58).
This beauty features a Tooled Rim with Pronounced Spout, Tall Neck, Tooled Shoulder, Bulbous Body with Tooled Footer, Applied Handle with Cobalt Accents at the Terminals, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Brushed Cobalt Leaf on the Spout, and Brushed Cobalt Tulip on the Body. The tulip has four leaves and a blossom with six petals. Stands 10" tall.
Very Good Condition. A narrow 1/2" chip on top of the rim, and three areas of shallow chipping on the side, two of which appear to be in the making and glazed over and one not (closeup 1). No inner rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A short surface drying/firing line inside in the making (closeup 2).
