    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Batter Jug made and stamped by "Cowden & Wilcox, Harrisburg, PA."

     

    This is the mark of John Wallace Cowden and Isaac Wilcox who ran the pottery in Harrisburg with this stamp from 1863 to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 55-58).

     

    This beauty features a Chrysanthemum around the Spout, and the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Sideways Chrysanthemum on the Back.  Additional cobalt accent on the edges of the handle holders and bottom pour handle.  Dark and shiny cobalt used throughout the decoration.  Comes with an old handle and spout cap.  Stands 8 1/2" tall.  

     

    Very Good Condition.  A 3/4" chip on each side of the spout (closeups), and two chips on the bottom pour handle (1/4", 5/8").  No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.  Two kiln touches in the making. 

     

    A well-decorated batter jug wearing signature Cowden and Wilcox chrysanthemum decoration.
