Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "C. W. Braun, Buffalo, N.Y."
This is the mark of Charles W. Braun who ran the old Heiser pottery in Buffalo from 1857 to 1896 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 75).
Dating around 1870, this beauty features a Thick Rounded Rim, Applied Handles, Pottery Stamp, Freehand Capacity Number, and a Tulip created with a Slip Cup and Brush. The tulip has 4 leaves with striped accents executed with a slip cup and a blossom with 5 petals executed with a brush. Measures 11 1/2" tall and 11 3/4" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. Some thin water glass rings inside and some light stains outside, a 1/2" chip inside the rim and 1/4" chip at the base, and a 4 1/2" line below the left handle only partially visible inside (closeup 1). No outer rim chips or restoration. A surface drying or firing line on the back at the bottom in the making and glazed over (closeup 2).
