Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Superb and Uncommon 2 Gallon Stoneware Decorated Jar whose form and decoration indicate that it was made by Henry Lowndes of Petersburg, Virginia.

 

Lowndes made stoneware in Petersburg from 1830 to 1842. See Eric Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia, pp. 184-207 and Charles Umstott, "The Lowndes Stoneware Pottery of Petersburg, Virginia," MESDA Journal, Vol. XXI, No. 2 (Winter 1995), pp. 83-97.

 

Provenance: Pictured in Eric C. Jenkin's, Ceramics in Virginia, p. 201, Figure 5.14. It comes most recently from the fine collection of William H. Chapman III of Virginia.

 

This beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form, Tooled Rounded Rim, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accents at the Terminals, A Wavy Stripe at the Top with a Tree of Life on one side and a Wavy Stripe at the Top and "2 Gall." Capacity Number in Script and a Butterfly on the other side.  The tree of life has five branches and is drawn with a leafy stem poured from a slip cup sporting five blossoms made with a brush.  The script on the other side is executed with a slip cup by a skilled hand using dark and shiny cobalt.  Stands 12" tall.

 

Very Good Condition with Restoration.  A fine, sealed vertical hairline from below the handle to the base on the left side (closeup).  Some fine scattered craze lines.  No chips, cracks, or stains.
