Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 4 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jar whose form and decoration make it easy to attribute to John Poole Schermerhorn.
Schermerhorn had a pottery on Rocketts Landing of the James River in Henrico County, Virginia from around 1817 to 1837. He died in 1850. See Eric C. Jenkins, Ceramics in Virginia, pp. 116-171.
Provenance: This pitcher comes most recently from the fine collection of William H. Chapman III of Virginia.
This beauty features a Large 4 Gallon Size, Ovoid Form, Tooled Rim and Shoulder, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent Along the Top and 4 Capacity Number Below, and an Elaborate Brushed Cobalt Floral Garland in Brilliant Cobalt Blue on Each Side. Each garland has three leaves and three blossoms or fruit. Stands 15" tall.
Very Good Condition. Other than light staining, the jar is as made! Remarkable!
