Item 8125
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful and early 2 Gallon Crock with Gorgeous Decoration.
The distinctive decoration indicates that this is the work of Abial Price of Middletown Point, New Jersey who ran his pottery from 1840 to his death in 1852. It has the same decoration as is found on his rare field jug as illustrated in M. Lelyn Branin, The Early Makers of Handcrafted Earthenware and Stoneware in Central and Southern New Jersey , p. 114-115. (see Branin, pp. 194-195 for more discussion of this potter).
This beauty features Distinct Potter's Finger Rings Inside, Wide Rim with Deep Groove For Tying A Cover Over the Top, Sides that Taper Out at the Bottom, and an Elaborate Tulip that Looks Like it is Flying and Framed by a Circle of Dashes. The tulip has 13 petals, 7 leaves, and a frame of 15 dashes. Strong cobalt on a light gray glaze for maximum contrast. Stands 9 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Some base chips, mainly along the back edge (1/4" to 3/8"), and a 1" chip on the underside at the edge. No rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Exceptionally clean glaze for being 170 years old!
