Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Bowl with Folky Decoration.
The decoration indicates that this bowl was made by Smith & Day of Norwalk, Connecticut. Asa Smith and his Cousin, Noah Day, potted in Norwalk from 1843-1849 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 58-60).
This beauty features a Tall Rim, a Frilly Lincoln Drape Across the Top, abd a Folky Floral in the Middle with Ground Cover and Two Blossoms, one with a Long Stem. Strong cobalt used throughout. Measures 7 1/2" tall and 11" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. Some traces of water glass staining inside, four narrow chips (1/4" to 1/2") and a narrow 2 1/4" sliver chip inside the rim, a 1" line above the right handle not seen inside. No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, outer stains, or restoration.
A remarkable large and early stoneware bowl from Connecticut.
