    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock attributed to R. J. Grier of Chester County, Pennsylvania.

     

    Ralph Grier and family ran a pottery in Mount Jordan, Chester County, Pennsylvania from the 1840's to 1910 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 12-13).

     

    Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features a Squared Rim, Tooled Line at the Shoulder, Two Brushed Tulips on Each Side, and Cobalt Accents at the Handle Terminals.  The lid may or may not be original and features cobalt comma vining at the edge and cobalt accent around the knob.  Measures 6 3/4" tall and 11 3/4" wide across the top.

     

    Excellent Condition. The crock has a 1/2" chip inside the rim, minor nibbles under each handle with light exfoliation near one, and a faint Y on the bottom not visible outside.  No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.  The lid has six chips on the seating ring on the underside (1/4" to 1 1/4"), and some staining from use.  No outer rim chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
