Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Preserve Jar stamped "W. Roberts, Binghamton, N.Y."
This is the mark of William Roberts, son-in-law of Noah White of Whites Utica Pottery, Utica, New York. He founded a branch of the family business in Binghamton in 1848 and ran it until 1888 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Folky Bird on a Branch Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup. The bird is looking left and sports a dotted breast and a fantail. Stands 11" tall.
Exceptional Condition. As made. No damage of any kind. A 2" drying/firing line inside (closeup) that shows outside as a faint 3/4" pencil-like line above the left handle-- all on the making.
