Item 12825
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare Double-Sized Stoneware Canning Jar.
The maker is given on one side in a Paisley-Shaped Stencil surrounding a Tobacco Leaf: "Jas. Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA." James Hamilton ran his pottery in Greensboro from the 1860's to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
The merchant for whom Hamilton made the jar is given on the other side in a similar stencil: "E. J. Miller & Co., Alexandria" Miller was a china and glassware merchant in Alexandria, Virginia.
Excellent Condition. A couple pinhead-size nibble on the bottom fold of the tooled rim and a couple very small, light stains. No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
One of only a handful of double-sized jars from Greensboro that I have ever seen.
