Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this superb 3 Gallon Stoneware Crock that reads, "James Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA."

 

James Hamilton ran his pottery in Greensboro from the 1860's to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).

 

Circa 1870, this beauty features a Tooled Grooved Rim for Ease of Tying a Cover Over the Top, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent, and Top to Bottom Decoration!  From the top down, we  find a straight stripe defining the rim, freehand vining cascading across the shoulder, two wavy stripes and another row of vining framing the company advertising in the middle, and the capacity number framed by dashes and underscored by a straight stripe completing the decoration at the bottom.  Measures 11 1/2" tall and 10 1/4" wide across the top.   

 

Excellent Condition. A chip on each end of the left handle as shown.  That's it!  No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
