Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 3 Gallon Stoneware Jar made by "J. D. Stephenson, Slippery Rock, PA."  
 
Stephenson was a farmer and potter who lived in Butler County, PA near Slippery Rock and Wick PA.  He made stoneware in the winter months using local clay.  He worked at least in the 1870's and 1880's.  Few of his pieces survive.  
 
This jar was in the collection of Beth and Earl Trimble.  It is featured in Phil Shaltenbrand's Book, Big Ware Turners on p. 149 (picture in this writeup).  
 
This beauty features an Extensively Turned Rim and Shoulder, Applied Grooved Handles, and the Pottery Stencil Accented with Flourishes.  Stands 14" tall.  
 
Very Good Condition.  Some minor glaze wear around the middle, a 3/8" chip on the left handle and a 1/2" chip on the right handle, and a small 3" curved hairline at the bottom in the back that wraps under across the underside (closeups).  No rim or base chips, stains, or restoration.
