Item 12177
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this superb 2 Gallon Stoneware Jar attributed to Richard Remmey of Philadelpia.
Richard Remmey made stoneware in Philadelphia at the family pottery from the 1860's to the turn of the century (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-9).
Circa 1860, this beauty features a Carefully Tooled Square Rim and Shoulder with Grooves for Ease of Tying Down a Cloth or Waxed Paper Cover, and Two Tall Brushed Cobalt Tulips on Each Side in Bright and Shiny Cobalt. The tulips have long stems with many leaves culminating at the top with two larger curly leaves and a sizeable blossom. This is a pleasing and easily identifiable Remmey decoration often found on the front of Remmey pitchers. Stands 13 1/2" tall.
Did I mention how fantastic the cobalt is on this one!
Excellent Condition. Two minor 1/8" nibbles on the rim. Otherwise, as made!
