Item 11133
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Whimsical 4 Gallon Crock whose decoration indicates that it was made by the Somerset Potters' Works of Somerset, Massachusetts.
This pottery was operated by Leonard and Benjamin G. Chace from 1847-1882 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 51).
This beauty features a "Tornado in the Woods" parting a couple of trees (I have had too much coffee!). The tornado has 10 loops and 52 dots (apparently I don't have enough to do either!). The decoration is executed with a combination of slip cup and brush and fills the front of the crock with deep and shiny cobalt. Measures 11" tall and 12" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. A narrow 1/4" chip on the right handle. Otherwise, as made! Some stone pings in the making.
