Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Jug made and stamped by "N. A. White & Son, Utica, N.Y." [Upside down]
This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware , pp. 69-70).
Dating about 1870, this beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large Paddletail Bird on an Orchid Branch. This is one of White's signature decorations and a perennial favorite with collectors. The bird is looking backward which a rare position for this design, and the branch is elaborate with an orchid blossom and 7 buds. An abundance of brilliant cobalt blue. Stands 13 1/2" tall!
Excellent Condition. A 3/8" chip on the left side of the spout in the back, a 3/4" chip on the underside at the edge, and a colored 3/8" flake on the tip of the tail feather (closeup). No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
