Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 1/2 Gallon Stoneware Pitcher attributed to R. J. Grier of Chester County, Pennsylvania.
Ralph Grier and family ran a pottery in Mount Jordan, Chester County, Pennsylvania from the 1840's to 1910 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 12-13).
Circa 1860, this beauty features a Semi-Squared Rim, Pinched Spout, Tall Neck, Bulbous Body, Footer, Applied Handle, and Generous Cobalt Freehand Decoration. Leaves flank the spout and with two more on each side. The body is graced by a large double tulip decoration with a leaf on each side. Additional cobalt at the handle terminals. Stands 12 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A very narrow 1/2" long chip on the top of left side of the rim, a 1/4" chip on the bottom of the rim in the back, a very faint line in the center of the handle, and some staining from use. That's it! No inner rim or base chips, body hairlines or cracks, or restoration. A
