Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Merchant Jug made and impressed for "John K. Smith & Co.'s, Wholesale Drug Warehouse, 296 North Second St., Philadelphia." 
 
The form makes it easily to attribute this jar to the Remmey Pottery of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-10).
 
You don't see many early Remmey merchant jugs. 
 
Circa 1850, this beauty features a Tall and Slender Form, Warm Salt Glaze, and Five Lines of Impressed Advertising.  Stands 15 1/4" tall.
 
Excellent Condition. A  narrow 1/2" chip on the side of the handle, a narrow 1 1/4" chip on the base edge, and some staining from use.  No spout chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
